Job Description


PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE:

Provide design and consulting services to the Process Engineering Group staff on chemical processes and equipment involving systems and unit operations. Assist the Process staff in conducting engineering studies and analyses. Perform calculations and interact with both AFRY personnel and client personnel. Assist and advise during installation and start-up of assigned projects.
SCOPE:

  • Assist with the development of P&ID drawings and process design for major and minor detailed engineering projects.
  • Ability to create mass and energy balances for projects and studies.
  • Assist in analyzing and defining project scope, estimated cost, and technical aspects of a project in accordance with client and AFRY specifications.
  • Perform field surveys in preparation for design.
  • Travel to client facilities is required from time-to-time for project meetings and gathering of drawings and data.
  • Assist in the preparation of drawings, purchase specifications, schedules, operation manuals, and related construction details for projects.
  • Assist in the preparation of construction documents such as project scope of work documents and bidding documents.
  • Support field installation, checkout, and start-up of mechanical equipment and piping systems. Displays ability to trouble shoot process related issues during startups or mill visits.
  • Participate in client and project team meetings as required.
  • Assist the Project Engineer in performing project-related tasks as required.
  • Assist with the preparation of process descriptions and loop functional descriptions.

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Discipline Lead – Process. Working relationships will exist within all areas of the firm utilizing in-house talent on a project assignment basis. Interface with the client on a project basis is required.


Qualifications


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Must possess a college degree from an accredited university in Chemical Engineering, Pulp and Paper Science, or related discipline with sound knowledge of engineering fundamentals.
  • Preference is for a candidate with academic studies, co-op or internship experiences, or work-related experiences in pulp and paper mill processes. Other qualifications that are a bonus for the successful person for this position, but are not required, are knowledge of the design and operation of chemical processes from other industries such as food and beverage, metals and mining, and basic chemicals.
  • Preference is for 0-5 years of experience in engineering or manufacturing related job.
  • Understanding of or the ability to learn the operation of computer software utilized for process design and P&ID development, such as or similar to CADSIM, WinGEMS, Pipe-Flo, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to converse with clients and technical groups. Written skills include the ability to effectively write study reports and produce presentation slides for meetings and reports.
  • Remote work is permitted for a portion of the time required for this position. Remote work requires high-speed internet service at the candidate’s home. Work from the Birmingham office is necessary from time-to-time and more often for certain projects which require additional face-to-face interaction with team members. The successful candidate will live within 3-4 hours of Birmingham with preference for the metropolitan Birmingham area. Relocation assistance will be considered for qualified candidates.
